Anyone who is familiar with a regular check register will quick
start using it. Compare EliteCheck with other financial programs,
and you will find EliteCheck the easiest to learn and use among
them.
You can use EliteCheck to record transactions, categorize them,

1.2 Using This Manual
This manual provides a full description of EliteCheck. You do not
have to read the entire manual to start using EliteCheck. Instead,
use this manual as a reference. EliteCheck is designed to get you
quick start using it.
To learn to use EliteCheck, read the READ.ME file or the first two
sections in this manual and start to use EliteCheck. When you have
a question or need more information as you experiment working with
EliteCheck, You can 1) get on-line help by pressing F1 key or 2)
look into this manual for the relevant part.
1.3 Differences between Evaluation and Registered Versions
For every major version number, EliteCheck comes in one of two
different packages: the evaluation (trial use) version and the
registered version.
The evaluation version of EliteCheck is designed to license a
limited use at no charge so that you can "try before buy". Although
the evaluation version is copyrighted, you are allowed (and
encouraged) to freely distribute it to others as long as 1) no
parts of the package are omitted or modified, 2) the package is not
distributed in conjunction with any other product 3) and no fee or
charge is requested.
If you do not want to continue to use it after a trial use of
period, you don't have to register it. Otherwise, you are expected
to register. When you register, you receive the latest registered
version of EliteCheck. You are licensed to use one copy of the
registered version on any one computer at any one time.
As far as functionality is concerned, both the evaluation and the
registered versions of EliteCheck are the same unless the version
numbers are different. This enables the user to fully evaluate
Page 3
EliteCheck before registration. In other aspects than
functionality, there are several differences between them as
follows:
- A registration reminder screen appears as you quit the
evaluation version. (A short reminder message also
appears in the beginning.)
- The registered version comes with a printed User Manual,
whereas the evaluation version includes it on disk only.
The printed User Manual may be different only in format
from the manual on disk.
- The registered version is supported by the author
according to the registered user support policy. For
information on the registered user support policy, refer
to the page near the front cover of this document or
Appendix B or the REGISTER.DOC file.

1.6 System Requirements
The following are the system requirements to run EliteCheck on your
computer:
- IBM PC, XT, AT, or IBM-compatible
- DOS 3.0 or later version
- minimum 512K memory
- monochrome or color monitor
- (optional) a parallel printer
- a hard disk or
two floppy disk drive or
one floppy disk drive that supports minimum 720K capacity
If you plan to use EliteCheck with two floppy disk drives, you need
also two floppy diskettes (in addition to the DOS system diskette):
one for the EliteCheck program disk, and the other for your data
disk.
If you plan to use EliteCheck with one floppy disk drive, you need
a diskette with minimum 720K capacity that will contain both
program files and data files.
1.7 Making Backup Copies of EliteCheck Disk
Although you can use the distributed EliteCheck disk directly as
your program disk, it is a good idea to make a copy of it and to
keep the distributed disk in a safe place. To make a copy of the
distributed disk, simply use DOS DISKCOPY command as follows.
1) Invoke DISKCOPY command.
A>DISKCOPY A: A:
2) When you see a message saying "Insert SOURCE diskette in
drive A:", Insert the distributed EliteCheck diskette
into drive A. Then press any key.
3) Wait for a message saying "Insert DESTINATION diskette in
drive A:". When this message appears on the screen,
insert a blank diskette in drive A and press any key.
Page 5
2. Installing EliteCheck
Before you start to use EliteCheck, you must install EliteCheck on
your computer by performing the following two procedures:
- Installing the EliteCheck files to your disk
- Ensuring that the CONFIG.SYS file contain files parameter
at least 15.
You can do the two procedures above in any order.
2.1 Installing EliteCheck on Your Disk
Before you use EliteCheck, it must first be installed on your
computer. You need only install EliteCheck once. Installing
EliteCheck is very simple. You need only copy the files of
EliteCheck either to a subdirectory on your hard disk or to a
formatted blank diskette.
To facilitate installation, the EliteCheck package comes with an
INSTALL program (INSTALL.EXE) which you can run to install
EliteCheck. The INSTALL program will automatically copy the files
in the EliteCheck disk either to a subdirectory in a hard disk or
to a formatted blank diskette.
<Note>
If you obtained the EliteCheck program package in compressed
file format and you have a hard disk, you probably have
already loaded EliteCheck files to your hard disk while you
were extracting the files. In that case, skip to the next
subsection 2.2, The CONFIG.SYS File.
<Note>
When you install EliteCheck to a floppy diskette manually, you
only need copy the following three files:
EC.EXE EC.HLP EC.REF
+--+
| | To Install EliteCheck to a Hard Disk
+--+
1) Start your computer.
2) Insert the EliteCheck Install disk in drive A.
3) Run the INSTALL.EXE by typing as follows:
Page 6
A:INSTALL C:\EC
The Installation program will automatically install
EliteCheck to the \EC directory in drive C. If you want
to install EliteCheck to a directory other than \EC,
simply replace C:\EC with the directory path name you
want when you invoke the installation program.
If the specified directory does not exist, INSTALL.EXE
will automatically create it.
+--+
| | To Install EliteCheck with Two Floppy Drives
+--+
To use EliteCheck without a hard disk, you need two floppy disk
drives: one for a EliteCheck program disk and the other for a data
disk. To install EliteCheck to a floppy diskette, do the following
steps:
1) Start your computer with a DOS system diskette.
2) Insert the EliteCheck Install disk in drive A.
3) Insert a formatted blank diskette in drive B.
3) Run the INSTALL.EXE by typing as follows:
A:INSTALL B:\
While running the INSTALL program, follow the
instructions on the screen.
The Installation program will install EliteCheck to the
root directory in drive B.
2.2 The CONFIG.SYS File
To run EliteCheck on your computer properly, the CONFIG.SYS file in
the root directory of your DOS boot disk must contain a line 'FILES
= nn' in which nn must be a number equal to or greater than 15. If
the CONFIG.SYS file does not contain this line or nn is less than
15, you need to change it. If the CONFIG.SYS file does not exist,
you need to create one.
(The DOS boot disk is the disk from which your computer has
started. If your computer has a hard disk and you started your
computer without a DOS system diskette in drive A:, then the hard
disk is your DOS boot disk. Otherwise, the DOS diskette in drive A:
is the DOS boot disk.)
Page 7
The EliteCheck package comes with a utility program 'ECFILES.EXE'
that automatically changes or creates the CONFIG.SYS file if
necessary. You need run ECFILES only once. To use this utility,
simply invoke it before you start to use EliteCheck as follows:
+--+
| | Changing CONFIG.SYS File with ECFILES utility program
+--+
1. Insert EliteCheck Install disk into disk drive A:.
2. Invoke ECFILES by typing ECFILES and pressing <ENTER>.
A>ECFILES
3. When ECFILES asks for your boot drive name, type your
boot disk drive name.
4. If your computer has a hard disk, skip to step 4.
If your computer does not have a hard disk, ECFILES will
prompt you to insert a DOS system diskette into drive A.
Then, insert your DOS system diskette and press ENTER.
5. When ECFILES is finished, a message will appear on your
screen. If the message says:
The CONFIG.SYS file was created
or
The CONFIG.SYS file was changed,
then restart the computer by pressing <CTRL+ALT+DEL>.
*************************** IMPORTANT *****************************
If you have changed or created the CONFIG.SYS file, you must
restart your computer by pressing CTRL,ALT,DEL keys simultaneously
or by pressing the reset button on your computer.

| | Adjusting Color Type of Screen
+--+
EliteCheck supports both monochrome and color monitor. When it
starts to run, it automatically adjusts its color mode according to
the type of your monitor adapter. If the monitor adapter is of
color type such as CGA, EGA, and VGA, EliteCheck displays in
colors. Otherwise it displays in black and white.
It could happen, however, that the screen looks unreadable when you
start EliteCheck. This is most probably because you use a
monochrome monitor on a color graphics adapter. In that case, you
need to force EliteCheck to display in white and black. You can do
this by adding an optional argument to the command line when you
start EliteCheck as follows:
C>EC /M
The /M option forces EliteCheck to display in black and white
regardless of the actual monitor configuration.
3.2. Getting On-Line Help
EliteCheck offers extensive, context-sensitive on-line help to
guide whatever operation you are currently doing. You can get on-
line help in two ways:
1) If you are not sure of what to do with the current
screen, window, or menu, you can press F1 key to bring up
a help screen for information specific to the current
operation.
2) If you need general information on how to use Help,
menus, etc., you can select one of the pulldown menu
choices associated with Help main menu.
One of the Help pulldown menu choices, "EliteCheck
Registration", provides information on how to register
EliteCheck.
In any case, you can control the help screen by using the following
keys:
Page 10
Esc to exit Help screen
Up/Down to scroll Help screen up/down
PgUp to move Help screen up one page
PgDn to move Help screen down one page
Home to go to the top of Help message
End to go to the end of Help message
3.3 Using EliteCheck for the First Time
The first thing you need to do with EliteCheck when you start the
program for the first time is to set up your first bank account.
Later on, when you need additional accounts, you can create more
accounts choosing the Select Account Menu item under the Account
main menu item.
If your printer is not Epson-compatible or connected to other than
LPT1 port, you need to set up printer configuration using the
Printer Setup menu item. For more details, see Section 9, Setting
up Printer.
If you want to choose a payee name from a payee list when you
record transactions, you may pre-register payee names in a payee
directory using the Payee Setup menu item. For more details, see
Section 10, Setting up Payee List.
+--+
| | Setting Up a New Account for the First Time
+--+
If you have started EliteCheck for the first time, a New Account
Setup window will automatically appear on the screen after you
select data disk drive. Enter the required information in each
field.
Account Type: Select either BUSINESS or PERSONAL by pressing
space bar. BUSINESS represents business
account, and PERSONAL represents personal
account.
The only difference between a business account
and a personal account is that they use
separate sets of categories.
Account Name: Type 1-25 alpha-numeric characters which will
uniquely identify this account thereafter.
Account No: Type 1-25 alpha-numeric characters which is
usually the bank account number. You may leave
this field blank.
Page 11
Balance: Type beginning balance of this account.
As of: Type beginning date of this account.
You can move between the fields by pressing the following
keys:
Up Arrow: Move Up
Down Arrow: Move Down
<ENTER>: Move to next field
<TAB>: Move to next field
<Shift-TAB>: Move to previous field
When you are at the last field, pressing <ENTER> will complete
creating this new account. When you have completed New Account
Setup, the Check Register window for the newly created account will
appear on the screen. From now on, you can record transactions
writing directly on the Check Register on the screen.
If you want to cancel this New Account Setup procedure, press
<ESC>. When you cancel the New Account Setup procedure, Only main
menu items will be displayed on the top of the screen. If you want
to enter the New Account Setup window again, select Account menu
item, and further select the New Account Setup submenu item. For
more about selecting menu items, see the subsection 3.7, EliteCheck
Command Menus.
When you start EliteCheck next time, this first-time account setup
window will no longer appear. Instead, EliteCheck will
automatically bring up the Check Register for your account as long
as there exists only one account. If you set up multiple accounts,
EliteCheck will bring up the Account Select Window at the start.
3.4 Exiting EliteCheck
+--+
| | Exiting EliteCheck
+--+
To exit EliteCheck, do the following steps:
1) If none of the menu items on the top line of the screen
is highlighted, press <ESC> until one of them becomes
highlighted.
2) If Quit menu item is not highlighted, press right arrow
key until Quit menu item gets highlighted.
3) Press <ENTER>.
Page 12
4) When you see a pulldown menu item saying "Exit to DOS",
press E or <ENTER>.
3.5 Selecting an Account to Use
Read this subsection only if you have already multiple accounts on
EliteCheck at the time you start the program.
If you have already set up two or more accounts, the Account Select
Window will appear when you start EliteCheck. The Account Select
Window contains a list of existing accounts from which you can
choose one to use. Move cursor to the account name which you want
to work with, and then press <ENTER>. When an account is selected,
the Check Register for that account will appear on the screen.
3.6 EliteCheck Screen Layout
In normal operation, the EliteCheck screen is divided into three
major areas: the Command Menu Bar, the Check Register, and the Help
message line.
The Command Menu Bar always appears on the top line of the screen.
It contains six main menus each of which brings up its pulldown
menu when activated. A pulldown menu only appears when its
associated main menu is highlighted.
The Check Register is a truly electronic copy of your paper
register on the screen. It consists of the account title,
transaction entries, and a status bar. The account title displays
your current account name on top of the check register. The status
line on the bottom of the check register shows your current account
number, the number of transaction entries, and ending balance. The
EliteCheck Check Register supports full screen editing capabilities
so that you can record transactions directly on the screen.
Balances are always recomputed as each transaction is completed.
The Help message line always shows important keys which you can use
at particular times of your operations. When an error condition
occurs, an error message pops up over the message line. You can
clear the error message by pressing <ESC> key.
The next two subsections describe the Command Menus and the Check
Register in much more detail.
3.7 EliteCheck Command Menus
Page 13
EliteCheck can be in one of two modes:
1) Check Register Mode
2) Command Menu Mode
Once you have completed either selecting an account to use or
creating a new account after you started EliteCheck, EliteCheck
enters into Check Register Mode. In Check Register Mode, you can
record transactions directly to the Check Register on the screen.
When you press <ESC> key while in Check Register Mode, EliteCheck
enters into Command Menu Mode highlighting one of the command menu
items on top of the screen.
In Command Menu Mode, EliteCheck provides you with a set of menu
items to perform a variety of functions and options. The EliteCheck
Command Menus are organized into a two-tiered menu system
consisting of a horizontal menu bar with submenus that drop down
from it. The menu bar is always on display across the top of the
screen. Each menu item in the menu bar is associated with a so-
called pulldown submenu.
+--+
| | Command Menu Structure

The menu bar consists of six main menu items: Account, Edit,
Reconciliation, Print, Setup, and Quit. Each of the main menu items
has one or more pulldown submenu choices:

Appendix A. What is Shareware?
EliteCheck is marketed by shareware distribution method. Shareware
is user-supported software. Shareware distribution gives users a
chance to try software before buying it. If you try a shareware
program and continue using it, you are expected to register.
Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of
comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad
ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The
author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the
software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For
example, some authors require written permission before a
commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
it's commercial or shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting
your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because
the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the
ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you
don't pay for it.

not exceed 60 days. If you continue to use EliteCheck after a trial
period, you must register and pay for your use of EliteCheck.
The EliteCheck package is defined as containing all the materials
listed in the PACKING.LST text file. If any files listed in the
PACKING.LST file, or the PACKING.LST file itself, are missing, then
the package is not complete. Please contact the author to obtain a
complete package.
Please feel free to pass copies of EliteCheck along to your friends
for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if

You are provided with two convenient ways of completing the
registration form as following:
1) Use the registration form on screen provided by
EliteCheck program. When you select the EliteCheck
Registration pulldown menu choice associated with Help
main menu, or when you try to exit Shareware version of
EliteCheck, you will be given a choice to bring up a
registration form on the screen. Follow the instructions
on the screen to complete and print the form.
2) Or, simply print the REGISTER.FRM text file on disk and
fill it out. The REGISTER.FRM file contains a
registration form.
You can also write your own letter indicating your mailing address,
payment method, disk size (5.25" or 3.5"), and credit card
information (card #, expiration date, your signature) if payment by
credit card.
If you choose phone order (from PsL with credit card), you do not
need a registration form.
